West Berwick Golf Club was established in July of 1999 during a discussion at the Marine Hotel in North Berwick by golfers from Southern Illinois and Southern Indiana who were visiting Scotland to attend the British Open held at Carnoustie. Known as the "VanDeVelde Open", the 1999 Open will go down as one of the most memorable ever as Frenchman Jean VanDeVelde lost a two stroke lead on Hole #18. The eventual winner was Scotsman Paul Lawrie. While playing golf along the East Lothian coast of Scotland along the Firth of Forth, the golfers played the magnificent North Berwick West Links in the beautiful town of North Berwick, Scotland. The history, accessibility and charm of this club made an impression on the midwest golfers visiting and the conceptual groundwork was laid to start the planning of West Berwick Golf Club in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. With an emphasis on promoting Junior Golf, West Berwick Golf Club is dedicated to 1) increasing the love of golf by junior golfers, 2) increasing the knowledge of the history of the game of golf by all and 3) developing the knowledge of all golfers as to the etiquette and rules of the game. The name West Berwick Golf Club was intended as a memorial to the people of North Berwick, Scotland for the inspiration of this idea come to fruition. With their blessing, via letter from their Captain Neil Rankin, we are proudly promoting the ideals of Scottish golf to the American players. In 2008, with the cooperation and assistance of the City of Mt. Carmel, the club leased and has renovated the Old Golf Pro's residence (the original Country Club built in 1922) into their new club home. It now honors the game, players and traditions! Firmly rooted in the past but with an eye on the future of golf - The West Berwick Golf Club.
